Grade 9 · MAPEH – Arts

Global Vibes, Pinoy Pride

Day 1 – Discovering emerging popular performing and visual arts.

Essential question: How are K‑Pop, anime, cosplay, and murals already shaping our lives as Filipinos?

Lesson Story

You are surrounded by K‑Pop, anime, cosplay, and murals and many of you enjoy them every day.

BUT we rarely stop to ask if these are just “for fun” or if they are powerful arts that influence how we think and behave as Filipinos.

THEREFORE this unit will help us name, classify, and examine these art forms and their influence on Filipino culture and identity.

Learning Objectives

By the end of Day 1, you can…

  1. List at least two emerging performing arts and two emerging visual arts from around the world.
  2. Explain in your own words the difference between performing and visual arts.
  3. Share one way a global art form (K‑Pop, anime, cosplay, murals, etc.) influences your life as a Filipino.
Warm up Activity

“Stand If You…” Game

When the statement is true for you, stand up. Look around to see who is like you, then sit down again.

These are all part of emerging popular performing and visual arts that we will explore.

Key Ideas

Emerging · Popular · Performing · Visual

Emerging & Popular

Emerging – new or still developing art forms that became popular only in recent decades and spread fast through technology.

Popular – arts that many people enjoy and share; part of pop culture.

K‑Pop / P‑Pop Anime & Manga Cosplay Street Art
Performing vs Visual Arts

Performing arts – arts you see and hear as a performance over time (music, dance, cosplay shows).

Visual arts – arts you mainly look at as images or objects (drawings, digital art, murals).

Examples

Some Emerging Arts You Already Know

Performing Arts
  • K‑Pop / J‑Pop / C‑Pop performances
  • P‑Pop performances (e.g., SB19, BINI)
  • Cosplay on stage at conventions
  • Dance covers posted online
Visual Arts

Today we will practice sorting these examples.

Activity 1

“Sort It Out!” Picture Classification

In groups, decide for each picture:

  1. Is it Performing or Visual art?
  2. Does it look more Global, Filipino, or a Mix?
  3. Write a short reason for your answer.

Use your group sorting sheet as you move around the room (or as we show each picture on the screen).

Guiding Questions

How Do We Decide?

There can be more than one “reasonable” answer if you can explain your thinking.

Mini Sharing

What Did Your Group Notice?

Volunteers, please share:

Listen for how the same picture can be seen in different ways by different groups.

Activity 2

Reflection – Global Art in My Filipino Life

Think – Pair – Share

  1. Choose one global art form you like (K‑Pop, anime, cosplay, murals, etc.).
  2. Think silently:
    – How did you first discover it?
    – How does it affect your life as a Filipino?
  3. Share your answers with your partner.

Volunteers will then share with the whole class.

Exit Ticket

Before You Go…

In your notebook or on a small paper, answer:

  1. Give one example of an emerging performing art and one emerging visual art.
  2. In your own words, what is the difference between performing and visual art?
  3. Name one way any global art form influences Filipino culture or your life.

This helps your teacher see what you understood today and what we should review on Day 2.

Wrap‑Up

Thank You for Your Active Participation

Remember: these global arts are not just trends – they are powerful art forms that can shape how we see ourselves as Filipinos.

Next time, we will zoom in on K‑Pop, J‑Pop, and C‑Pop as emerging popular performing arts.
